Damp Investigation
We understand that discovering mould growth and wet rot is far from ideal, which is why quick and effective diagnosis of damp issues is crucial.
Typically, the first sign of a leak is damp or mould growth. However, older properties, especially those with converted basements, can sometimes be naturally damp. If this is the case, don’t worry – we will find a solution.
Specialist Leak Detection’s damp investigation unit employs advanced technologies and extensive expertise to identify the cause and nature of the dampness, allowing us to address it most effectively.
Some of the main causes of leaks (incorrectly identified as damp):
- Poorly fitted windows or doors
- Poorly maintained or installed tiles
- Flat roof leaks
- Blocked drains
- Leaking water mains
- Poorly installed DPC or tanking
- Leaking waste fittings
Mould is classified as a Category 1 risk, equivalent to having asbestos in your property, due to its serious health implications. This classification has been in place since 2001, recognising it as a significant health hazard. For more information on the health risks associated with damp and mould, visit the NHS link below:
Health hazards presented by damp
Older properties often experience high levels of damp, making it crucial to investigate mould growth. Typically, this involves stripping the plaster back to the core and refilling with waterproof rendering or using a tanking system to prevent recurrence.
When dealing with damp in older properties, methods to prevent mould growth should be thoroughly explored. This might include removing existing plaster and applying waterproof rendering or installing a tanking system.
After a leak, it is essential to ensure your property is properly dried using the right equipment. Often, if a leak is repaired but the property is not adequately dried or ventilated, mould can develop due to improper treatment.
Specialist Leak Detection does not undertake these works directly, but we ensure that our reports include recommendations for acceptable drying levels where necessary. Additionally, we may suggest decontamination with a fungicide if required.
